The Family Sabbath
We live in a day and age of overbusyness and overscheduling with long days, long weekends, and long hours. The demands of money and success are knocking at everyone's door. God says we must have a Sabbath. At the center of the Sabbath is the word "rest". The Lord's Sabbath is intended for people to learn to recharge. The Sabbath is God's stress management program! It is how to prevent burnout, how to refuel and catch your breath.
Scripture gives two reason for the Sabbath. The first, in Exodus 20:11, God finished creation in 6 days and then rested. God rested because the work was finished, and so must we. A second reason the Sabbath was given, God said, “Remember that you were slaves in Egypt and that the LORD your God brought you out of there with a mighty hand and an outstretched arm. Therefore the LORD your God has commanded you to observe the Sabbath day” (Deuteronomy 5:15). They were to rest in order to reflect on God's ability to work beyond their "work". There is a rest from work and then there is the rest of rejoicing in the power of God. Come rest with us this Sunday as Pastor Rick continues the Family Matters series with the sermon, "The Family Sabbath".
